InterMapper® 5.3.2 for Windows

InterMapper® is a network monitoring and alerting program. It provides an early-warning system that alerts an administrator to problems with their network servers and IP and AppleTalk networks. For more information about InterMapper, please visit our web site at:

InterMapper consists of two components: InterMapper Server, which provides core monitoring, charting, and alerting; and InterMapper DataCenter, which provides additional tools such as an SQL database and an authentication proxy that can be shared between InterMapper Servers. InterMapper Server is started by default, while InterMapper DataCenter is not.

Please note: InterMapper, including its built-in charts, will function correctly without InterMapper DataCenter. You should start InterMapper DataCenter only if you need the additional features it provides and if you are sure your machine meets the system requirements.

InterMapper Server and InterMapper DataCenter are Windows services. This means that once you start them, they automatically begin running when your computer boots up, before any users are logged in, and continue running even when no user is logged in. See Starting/Stopping InterMapper Services for instructions on starting and stopping these services.

InterMapper Server does not have its own graphical user interface. To interact with InterMapper Server, you can use either the built-in InterMapper client or the InterMapper RemoteAccess application. The InterMapper client allows you to connect to the InterMapper Server running on your own machine. InterMapper RemoteAccess allows you to connect to InterMapper servers running on any computer on a TCP/IP network.

If you have started InterMapper DataCenter, you can interact with it by choosing "Open InterMapper DataCenter" from the InterMapper Control Center system tray icon or by opening a web browser and navigating to:

InterMapper DataCenter ships with a self-signed SSL certificate. This means that when you navigate to it in your web browser, you may receive a warning that the certificate is invalid. You can check the certificate if you wish to, then safely continue to navigate to the page. The InterMapper DataCenter's settings page will allow you to upload your own certificate if you wish to do so rather than relying on the less secure certificate shipped with InterMapper.

Depending on your firewall settings, you may asked by Windows to allow or deny access to InterMapper or InterMapper DataCenter from either InterMapper RemoteAccess or your web browser.

» Installation Instructions

InterMapper 5.3.2 for Windows is shipped as a Windows installer which contains the necessary programs and support files for both Intermapper Server and InterMapper DataCenter. Here are the instructions for installing InterMapper.

  1. Double-click the file InterMapper_Setup_5.3.2.exe and follow the instructions. You will need to be an Administrator to install this software.

  2. The installation process will place a copy of the InterMapper client application in the InterMapper directory in the Program Files directory on your hard drive. When the installer finishes, it will launch the InterMapper client so you can view and configure your InterMapper Server.

  3. You will need a serial number or license certificate to run InterMapper for more than one hour. If you are a customer with a current maintenance contract, your FULL license certificate will work. If not, you can get a serial number via e-mail from:

  4. If you have determined that you wish to start InterMapper DataCenter, you may right-click on the InterMapper Control Center icon in the system tray and choose "InterMapper DataCenter->Start InterMapper DataCenter" to do so. You may then right-click again and choose "Open InterMapper DataCenter" to begin working with it.

Please note that while components may be started and stopped separately, all components are installed and uninstalled at once; they cannot be installed or uninstalled individually.

» Getting Started

The fastest way to begin making InterMapper work for you is to read the InterMapper Quick Start Guide or watch a Video Clip. In 15 or 20 minutes, you'll be monitoring your network with a map of your network.

» Documentation

The InterMapper manual is available in PDF and on-line HTML formats. The manual is also available locally via the Help menu in the InterMapper client or the InterMapper Help item in the InterMapper entry in the Start Menu.

For more information about InterMapper DataCenter, including tips on getting your directory server to work with the InterMapper Authentication Server component, please read the tech note below. The InterMapper DataCenter web interface also contains help links in many areas, which can be clicked to reveal additional instructions.

» What's New?

Please visit our What's New? page for a list of the new features in InterMapper Server and InterMapper DataCenter 5.3.2.

The Release Notes describe the new features and bug fixes in this version. The release notes are also available via the Release Notes item in the InterMapper entry in the Start Menu.

» What is Installed and Where

After running the InterMapper installer, there will be an InterMapper directory in the Program Files directory on your hard drive which contains all of the files InterMapper Server, InterMapper DataCenter and the InterMapper client require to run.

If it does not already exist, an InstallShield and/or an InstallShield Shared directory will be created in Program Files\Common Files. These files are required for uninstalling the software.

InterMapper, InterMapper DataCenter, Intermapper Control Center, and the InterMapper client will all add keys and values to the Windows registry as well.

» Starting/Stopping InterMapper Services

The best way to start and stop the InterMapper Server and InterMapper DataCenter services is to use the InterMapper Control Center system tray icon. You can also start and stop both services by using the standard service start/stop mechanisms in the Services control panel. The entry for InterMapper Server is named 'InterMapper', while the entry for InterMapper DataCenter is named 'InterMapper DataCenter'.

The best way to find out the version of InterMapper that is installed is to use the InterMapper Control Center. You can also start a web browser and navigate to the web interface for InterMapper DataCenter. The version number can be seen in the lower-right corner of the page. You can also type the following command in a command window:

"C:\Program Files\InterMapper\InterMapper.exe" -v

The best way to check if InterMapper Server or InterMapper DataCenter are currently running is to use the InterMapper Control Center system tray icon. You can also look for InterMapper.exe and imdc.exe in the Task Manager or check their entries in the Services control panel.

» Uninstalling InterMapper

To remove the InterMapper software from your system, use the Add or Remove Programs control panel to uninstall it in the standard way.

Uninstalling InterMapper preserves the settings for both InterMapper Server and InterMapper DataCenter. Thus, if you are not planning to reinstall InterMapper and wish to remove it completely, then after removing the software, you must manually remove the "InterMapper Settings" and "dwf" directories located at "C:\Program Files\InterMapper", then remove the InterMapper directory itself.

Please note that while components may be started and stopped separately, all components are installed and uninstalled at once; they cannot be installed or uninstalled individually.
